The purpose of this playbook is to help you start using Incredibuild Build Cache with a new C++ project. If you have multiple projects, repeat this procedure one by one… Introducing a new project to Build Cache often requires several trials and adjustments until it shows optimal results. The steps described here are designed to identify these adjustments quickly and with minimal friction. Once this procedure is complete, you can move the project to production use with Build Cache. We assume that at this point Incredibuild 10.x is already operational, and you have a baseline performance using virtual process distribution. The procedure begins with feasibility and tuning steps: these increase diagnostics at the expense of performance. After you validate that Build Cache is properly configured for the specific project, you will follow up with testing the actual acceleration. Finally, the procedure tests the efficiency of shared cache. Initiators using a shared cache must use the same toolset version (i.e., Visual Studio) to gain the caching benefits. This is different from distribution that does not require any setup alignment on Agents. In some cases (e.g., if the project contains auto-generated code) it is possible you will need to examine some of that code. Make sure you have access to the project source code or have someone else support you if the need comes.
